Closing Shift Beginner Guide: Keys, Codes & Survival

Learn the Escape Objective Before Opening the Hatch

A loud conversation can turn a key hunt into a chase. This Closing Shift beginner guide covers the four keys, four-digit code, and survival rules you need to escape the restaurant. Learn those rules early so you can spend your lives making progress instead of repeating the same mistakes.

  1. Ask the Puppet for help. Find the Puppet at the security desk before heading downstairs. You can speak, type, or select a question from its list. Use the list if spoken questions keep getting misunderstood, and ask about the hatch, flashlight, and threats.

  2. Remember both parts of the exit puzzle. You need four keys and the four-digit code to call the elevator back. Solving the keypad alone leaves the deadbolts blocking your escape. Keep track of your key progress alongside the numbers.

  3. Open the hatch with the wheel. Head down the stairs and hold the large wheel to crank the hatch open. Operate it one person at a time.

Search Containers and Keep Your Team Moving

  1. Search drawers, closets, and boxes. Keys can be tucked inside searchable containers, while code scraps supply parts of the elevator combination. Check a room thoroughly before moving on, and read pickup messages so you know what you found.

Room keys also appear during exploration, including keys labeled for places such as the dining room, kitchen, and backstage. Read those labels carefully: picking up a key for another room does not mean you have finished the elevator objective.

  1. Use shared discoveries to divide the work. Items found by one teammate count for the group. Call out completed searches and newly accessible rooms so everyone can work toward the remaining objectives.

Play solo or bring up to 10 friends. If you split up, assign different search areas; if you stay together, have teammates check separate containers instead of following one person through every drawer.

Match Your Response to the Animatronic

  1. Keep your flashlight steady on Foxy’s face. Maintain the beam until he retreats. Turning away to continue searching interrupts the defense you need against him, so deal with Foxy before returning to the room.

  2. Break Freddy’s view before trying to hide. Freddy hunts through sight and sound. Use closets, vents, and doors to create space, but remember that barricaded doors can be kicked in. Treat a barrier as time to act, and watch for interaction prompts if a hiding-place encounter begins.

  3. Use doorways against Fredbear. His size slows him when he squeezes through openings. Put doors between you and him, then use the delay to move away instead of waiting beside the entrance.

  4. Quiet down when Chica leaves the kitchen. A quiet kitchen signals that she is out, and she follows noise. Crouch and reduce unnecessary voice chatter while moving through nearby areas.

Golden Freddy has a different warning: if the screen goes dark and a golden figure appears in the corner, look away. Keep these responses separate; pointing a flashlight at every threat is no substitute for learning its rules.

Watch the Cameras and Respect the Birthday Song

  1. Answer outside warnings at the camera desk. When you hear that someone is outside, check the named exterior camera and use its flash on the squatter. Pay attention to the location in the warning so you can find him quickly.

In a group, have someone check cameras while others search. Rotate that job so the team keeps collecting keys and code scraps rather than gathering around the monitors.

  1. Stay put when the singing starts. If you hear singing, remain in the room. During the birthday party, stay in your seat and keep silent through the song. Follow instructions to look away when they occur, and wait until you are dismissed before leaving.

The party includes moments when questions are invited. Once you are told to be quiet, stop talking—even if the conversation was allowed a moment earlier.

Manage Your Light, Stamina, and Voice

  1. Let the flashlight recover between threats. On keyboard, press F to toggle it. Its charge drains during use and recovers while it rests. Switch it off when you can safely navigate without it, then keep it ready for Foxy.

Pick up batteries you find during searches. Avoid draining your light while standing around discussing the next room.

  1. Save sprinting for an escape. Watch your stamina before entering a long hallway or committing to a search. Leave yourself enough to retreat when an animatronic appears rather than spending it all reaching the next doorway.

  2. Use voice deliberately. The animatronics can hear voice chat, and saying the right thing can sometimes earn a reprieve. Listen to the encounter’s instructions instead of repeating the same plea throughout a chase. Silence also does not erase sight-based detection, so keep moving toward cover when necessary.

If you carry a shotgun, remember that its blast knocks animatronics back and stuns them temporarily. It supplies ten shells per round, with additional ammunition scattered around the restaurant. Use that opening to get away or reach an objective.

Choose Badge Goals That Teach Useful Habits

Several badges reward the same actions you need to learn for an escape. Use these as concrete practice goals:

BadgeHow to earn it
A LITTLE ADVICEAsk the Puppet for a tip.
CAMERA SHYFlash the squatter away using the cameras.
STAND YOUR GROUNDHold Foxy back with your light until he retreats.
BY THE BOOKPersonally find a key and a code scrap, then escape in the same night.
CLOSING TIMEEscape the restaurant in the elevator.
NOT A SCRATCHEscape without dying once.

Practice the camera flash and Foxy’s flashlight response while working toward CLOSING TIME. Leave NOT A SCRATCH for a run where you already recognize the threats and know how to reach the elevator.
